[Part 1 of 3] Doubt and faith in listening to the Dharma

Traditional teaching distinguishes between blind faith (accepting without questioning) and reasoned faith (confidence built through understanding and reflection).
The Buddha himself encouraged examining teachings rather than accepting them on authority alone. Productive doubt drives inquiry; destructive doubt paralyzes or closes the mind before genuine investigation happens.
Proper listening to the Dharma involves openness, attention, and setting aside preconceptions, likened to a vessel that must be clean, right-side up, and without holes to actually receive the teaching.

Taking refuge is the formal gateway that marks someone as a Buddhist practitioner. It's an act of turning toward a source of protection and guidance in the face of suffering and uncertainty, rather than a one-time ritual — it's meant to be renewed and deepened continuously.

About the Speaker: Ven. Tenzin Jamyang Born in Canada in 1971, Venerable Tenzin Jamyang (Jean-Francois Boily) became a Buddhist at the age of twenty. After completing university and working as a teacher, he left everything to go to Dharamsala, India where he studied Tibetan language and Buddhism with Tibetan teachers including His Holiness the Dalai Lama for five years. Following the advice of his teachers, he went to Sera Jey Monastery in South India where he enrolled in 2014 the lengthy nineteen year geshe program which mainly focuses on the study of the five great classical subjects of Pramanavartika, Paramita, Madhyamaka, Vinaya and Abhidharma. He is currently in the fourteenth year of the program.

He currently teaches Buddhist philosophy and Mind training texts online in French through On the Wings of Hayagriva.
