How can we apply the sutta practices to our daily life, to our modern challenges? In this workshop we will explore practice actions from the Suttas aiming to steady our human heart in the tumult.
We will use the unsettling situation of climate change to demonstrate a practice model. From talking with people about this, there are many emotions that come up in reaction to climate change. Like, helplessness, hopelessness, fear, anger; there is a big list of these reactions. Let’s find out how to navigate from these reactions (not ignoring them as I believe they are messengers) to a steadier mind of compassion and wisdom.
Some of the Sutta inspirations. ‘With Punna’ (SN 35.88). The Buddha points out to Punna, the reality of the people of Sunāparanta, being wild and rough. Then, what mind does Punna reply with? Also, ‘Effort’ (AN4.13). When we want to shift, this is a guide on how to do that.
Let’s see what flowers bloom.
About the Speaker: Tom Halbert
There have been a lot of stepping stones in Tom’s Dharma journey. Starting with Zen (in the 70’s, Roshi Phillip Kapleau), Theravada (Pra Kantipalo in Perth), Tibetan (Lam Rim at Chenrezig), Mahayana (Fo Guang Shan) to name a few. His lay person’s emphasis is in daily life practice. In response to seeing the human impact (Anthropocene) on planet and people he studied a degree in sustainable development, and looks for ways that we can bring the spiritual to the environmental. Tom lives in Blacktown Sydney with his wife Ling and is blessed with wonderful family and friends, including four grandchildren.
