Life has its ups and downs, highs and low. In Dharma terms, these are the ‘Eight Worldly Winds,’ the four complementary pairs of gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and infamy, and pleasure and pain. If you think about it, we spend a lot of our lives either running toward or away from these eight worldly situations, blown on the winds of our karma. All this running around, however, does not leave us in a content and happy place, but rather has us exhausted but still on the run. How can we be unmoved in the face of these gale-force winds? We’re going to be talking about how a little bit of Buddhist practice can keep us well grounded within the highs and lows.

About the presenter: Matthew Orsborn is a Dharma teacher and scholar of Buddhist studies. Originally from New Zealand, after many years of interest in Buddhism he joined the Fo Guang Shan monastic order in 2000. After graduating from the FGS Tsung Lin Buddhist University in 2002 under the Dharma name Huifeng, he later continued his MA and PhD studies at the University of Hong Kong, graduating in 2007 and 2012 respectively. Since graduation he has taught Buddhist studies at Fo Guang University in Taiwan, Mahidol University in Thailand, National Taiwan University, and is presently teaching at Oxford University in the UK. Leaving the Saṅgha in 2017, in addition to teaching the history, texts and teachings of Indian Buddhism, contemporary Chinese Buddhism, and meditation, he also translates classical Buddhist scripture and modern teachings from Sanskrit, Pāli and Chinese sources, and has travelled and taught internationally to lead Buddhist studies programs and meditation retreats.
