April 22, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

Urban Retreat: The Path to Awakening

Presenter: Venerable Dr. Candana

Wed 5 April (7-8.30pm AEST) and 22 and 23 April (9.30am – 5pm AEST)

Location: In person at Metta Centre (Bankstown) or Online (Zoom link below)

Cost: By Donation

Metta Centre is honoured to host Ven Dr Candana as part of his Australia trip. Ven Dr Candana will be giving an evening Dhamma talk, and a weekend non-residential retreat at the Metta Centre:

Wed 5 April: evening Dhamma talk on “Authentic Living through the Dhamma…by going back to the Source.”

22 and 23 April: Two-day non-residential retreat on: “The Path to Nibbāna requires Mettā (while gently holding the hand of Sati).”

About the Speaker: Ven. Dr. Candana (pronounced “Chandana”) is a Theravāda Buddhist monk, who has been a student of the Dhamma for over thirty years, having sat at the feet of many learned Mahātheras, and has been teaching meditation for over two decades. He has received the title of “Teacher of Dhamma” (Ācariya/Ājahn) in 1998, given to him by his first teacher, the late Ven. Dr. Havanpola Ratanasāra Nāyaka Mahāthero, who first encouraged the (then) layperson Candana to begin teaching the Dhamma in the 1990’s.

Academically, in addition to his MA in Buddhist & Comparative Studies, he has an MA in Psychology (being also licensed in the State of CA, as a Marriage and Family Therapist), and a Doctorate in Buddhist Ministry (DBMin). Through his Doctoral Dissertation, titled “Mindful Grounding and Trauma” (2018), as a Mental Health Clinician Bhante helped reconnect modern mindfulness practices back to the Dhamma by developing a practical intervention for healing his trauma patients and guiding other clinicians in their work of healing, while being rooted in the principles of the Dhamma. It is freely available on his website: www.mindreleased.com

Ven. Dr. Candana’s book “A Manual on Buddhist Meditation and Lifestyle: a return to the source” (2020) has already been published for free distribution, and currently is in its second print. It has been translated into Italian, Spanish, German, Armenian, Bahasa/Indonesian, Russian, and is now being translated into Chinese, Turkish, and Sinhala.

Bhante embodies the homeless life a Bhikkhu, travelling where he is most needed and welcomed, while giving regular Dhamma Talks and conducting meditation retreats online & around the world. For several years now, Bhante has also been working on a colossal project of retranslating (and then narrating) the Pāli Suttas for YouTube, to safeguard the Teachings of Lord Buddha for posterity. Ven Dr. Candana does not live in a monastery, nor is being supported by any large Buddhist community. He is supported by occasional donations from students and devotees.

Hybrid event: Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive session with the speaker in person at the Metta Centre (Bankstown). You are welcome to join the session in person at the Metta Centre or online by clicking on this link to access the session: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83506489824?pwd=cmpNQ1ljSmFVYURLWVN1dWllYUN1dz09 Alternatively, you can dial in from your telephone (call charges apply): +61 2 8015 6011 | Meeting ID: 835 0648 9824| Passcode: 718905
